Our "Travel Quilts"

In preparation for this adoption, we've already started thinking of ways that we can afford this whole process. It definitely won't be a "cheap" venture in our lives. The hardest part will be finding the money to cover the travel costs to Africa. To help with the travel costs, we hope to hold a couple events that will help us raise funds.

A couple years ago, when we first discussed adoption, my thoughts were with quilting. I get such satisfaction making a quilt or a sewn gift for a new child, or for a Christmas/Birthday gift for a niece or cousin. Thinking about a child wrapped in a quilt makes me smile from ear to ear. My thoughts then, and now, are to create baby/children quilts to sell. All money made from these quilts will be kept to help pay the costs of travel to Africa. Each quilt sold will be filled with thoughts and prayers for all children. They are full of my waiting stitches and filled with love and joy.

The picture below shows the projects I have already started. The boxes with quilts meant for our travel fund are marked with "waiting stitches". Every time I see these boxes, it sends a flourish in my heart, they remind me of the smiles and hugs that will join our family soon... I'm so excited for the day...

  1. Mara, Thank you for sharing your journey! I'm excited to hear more about it and hope all the best for your family. I will be praying for you guys.

Also, please put me on the list for at least one quilt! We'd love to support your cause. Tryg is going to be going into a 'big boy bed' soon and I'd love to have a quilt just for him and his new bed.

    1. Hi Mindy! I would love to make a quilt for Tryg! Do you have a pattern/color scheme/theme in mind? Is this for a twin bed or toddler bed? Let me know! So exciting :)
      Thanks,
      Mara

    2. Mara,

I didn't see this until now, sorry. His room is "spring green" with orange, brown, red, royal blue, yellow, etc. The bed is actually shaped like a VW bug and is toddler size. I was thinking bright colors and maybe a car/truck theme. Maybe I'll message you on Facebook.
      Thanks,
      Mindy

Love & attachment

As I hug and kiss my son goodnight (for at least the third time, 2 hours past his bedtime!) I can't help but think about my other children. How I long to hold them in my arms, kiss them goodnight, show them how much they are loved, let them know that I will always be their mother. Yesterday Jon and I attended our first education meeting. This was put on by our local agency conducting our homestudy. The focus of this meeting was to talk about what to expect once our children are home. We learned a lot about "triggers" for our children - when life could be more difficult, we also learned more about attachment issues, and we learned/discussed what it will be like for our children to live in a "white privileged" family & neighborhood. Since this education, my mind has been swarming with many different thoughts. Many I'd like to try to convey into my writing, although this may take a few blogs. Tonight, as I work on getting my son to go to bed - and Stay ...

Four years.

Four years. Four years ago today, our second blessing jumped into our arms for the first time. Four years ago today, these two became brothers and best friends. Four years ago today, all our worlds changed. And yet, how can it have only been four years? Feels like he has been our son from day one. The Lord blessed us ten-fold the day we met you, my son, our Tope. My world is better with you in it.

When silence is easiest

Life. Holy Toledo. Life has been, well, not sure if crazy really covers it at this point, but I'll go with that - Life has been crazy. I've been silent for awhile. There are the obvious reasons for the silence - A. I rarely have time to sit B. I'm exhausted C. Not a lot of time spent on me lately D. There are things I legally cannot write about to keep our kiddos safe But there are other reasons I've been silent. Silence is easy -  with silence, you don't have to answer the questions that haunt you. I think this silence comes from not knowing exactly what to say. The silence comes from this feeling of such overwhelming desire to have answers and knowledge of the unknown, that speaking outwardly of that unknown is - well - it's scary. About a month into our journey of welcoming four more children into our home, I read this article The Silence of Adoption    and I understood everything this woman was saying. Her words struck a chord. It was exactly eve...
